The Berlin Water Dialogues are the starting point of a series of cross- sectoral dialogues on water issues, which recognise the great political and economic relevance of the topic.

Climate change, growing populations, increased and more intensive industrial use of natural resources – great global effects on water resources are expected and will have widespread impact. This does not come as a surprise: Stakeholders in each sector are evaluating their vulnerability to future impacts and identifying possible measures for adaptation.

Unfortunately, little communication is taking place between stakeholders across sectors in order to examine how the sectors and potential impacts are interlinked. This lack of exchange across sectoral and disciplinary boundaries can result in serious planning deficiencies. Therefore, in order to develop sustainable strategies for global water management problems it is necessary to identify interdependencies and discuss how to deal with and make use of them.

What can businesses and industries contribute to a sustained and future-oriented management of water resources in a globalised world?

Through the process of the Berlin Water Dialogues, bridges between globally active industrial enterprises, of both the water sector and other industries, research centres as well as national administrations in charge of legal conditions and regulations, shall be built.
