AquaFit4Use paper sector:
Pilot platform workshop at the Hamburger Rieger GmbH & Co.
KG paper mill in Trostberg/Germany

In the framework of the AquaFit4Use project, extensive water treatment trains have been performed on the pilot scale at the Hamburger Rieger paper mill in Trostberg from March to September 2011. In keeping with our slogan “learning from each other”, the paper mill and four partner companies within the paper sector have organised an on-site workshop introducing all the forward-looking treatment trains to the three other involved sectors, chemistry, food and textile. On 14th September, 40 participants took advantage of the opportunity offered and were informed on-site about latest applied research results. Starting with introductory presentations, lively subsequent discussions served to provide the participants with a valuable overview of all investigated treatment trains based on seven advanced technologies, i.e.:
• Innovative filtration system (Flexible Fiber Filtration 3FM) (Veolia Environment)
• Anaerobic reactor Biomar ASB-x with a new type of sedimentation (EnviroChemie GmbH, EnviroChemia Polska Sp.z o.o.)
• Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology (PTS)
• Multiflo SofteningTM with a precipitation/crystallisation technology (Veolia Environment Research & Innovation)
• Ozone treatment for advanced COD elimination (ITT Water & Wastewater GmbH; WEDCO)
• Nanofiltration Envopur NF (EnviroChemie GmbH, EnviroChemia Polska Sp.z o.o.)
• Evapoconcentration (2 pilot plants) for the treatment of membrane concentrates and thus reduction of produced wastes (Veolia Environment Research & Innovation)

Examples of the studied treatment trains
All pilot plants were operated in parallel to study different integrated wastewater treatment concepts for water reuse in the production of paper and board. Thanks to extensive pre-tests on the lab scale during 2008 – 2010, the most promising and sustainable concepts were transferred and scaled-up onto the pilot scale, testing feasibility and efficiency under real process conditions. Numerous results have been obtained that call for further evaluation of the data during final project period, serve as a basis for exploiting the paper sector and other involved sectors as well after tailor-made adaptation. The main highlights of the results will be published in several public reports on this website beginning in 2012. The AquaFit4Use project partners are invited to download the presentations of the workshop from the internal website (Workspace SP6 -> Dissemination -> PTS -> Workshop). Corresponding papers will serve to disseminate the principal results to the European research community. A film team was on-site during the workshop to prepare a short documentary film on the AquaFit4Use project. This film will be accessible on this website in about eight weeks.
