Last 27th-28th January, Carlos Negro from UCM participated in the Official Launch Ceremony of the International Year of Chemistry took place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. This international year is an opportunity for all of us to connect with the power of chemistry to understand better our world and to shape our future. Evaluation of the efficacy of in-situ electro-synthesised H2O2 for the decolouration and mineralization of different commercially-important textile reactive dyes, in the presence of UV irradiation confirms that H2O2/UV treatment using an in-situ formation of H2O2 results in much higher decolouration rates than photolysis alone. The optimal working conditions were those that enabled maximum decolouration rates for textile dye RR 238 at the lowest electrical current (1 A) and a maximum flow-rate (150 mg/L). The best decolouration and TOC reduction was obtained with two reactive azo dyes having vinylsulphone reactive group...

Reverse osmosis and nanofiltration systems are being assessed as final step of effluent treatment trains aiming to recover the final effluent form paper mills and reuse it as process water. But one of the most important drawbacks of these treatments is the production of a retentate, as this effluent is usually high loaded of bio-recalcitrant organic matter and inorganics, and it must be disposed according with the legislation. By cultivation-independent specific gene probes screening two bacteria groups were analysed as dominant bacteria in paper mill samples. Detected bacteria groups were related to Tepidimonas arfidensis (member of the Betaproteobacteria) and Cloacibacterium (member of the Cytophaga-Flexibacter subphylum), respectively.

In this report is described a test protocol developed to define criteria of comparison to evaluate different sensors for water quality measurement. This test protocol allows calculating comparison criteria to benchmark these instruments.
